AT&T will soon begin selling iPhone 3G without the commitment of a 2 year contract. $599 gets you the 8GB, $699 for the 16GB. Normally with a contract, it's $199/$299 respectively. Of course this is a stupid idea, it's not unlocked, you can't use it under different carriers. But the worst part is buying the contract version then canceling it and paying the termination fee is cheaper than $599/$699.
