I've been asking wife to cancel our cable tv service for awhile and every time she says no. Now she agrees to sacrifice, since we trying to save money and move to a new location. I called up TimeWarner and instead of canceling the entire cable service, the rep asked me to downgrade to basic cable for $7.50, I would get channels 2-42. So I said OK. However when I checked TimeWarner's channel lineup for Basic Cable Service, it's only 2-22. I heard him wrong and I even repeated 2-42? to the rep, he didn't even correct me. I was angry about that but at least I won't have to go buy Rabbit ears for the 2 TVs.

Today, they have removed the cable channels, or have they? Wife and kid woke up to only a few channels. After I ran the auto channel setup, the TV found 35 analog channels, and 57 digital channels. We browsed through the channels, still have BRAVO, CNN, LMN, WEATHER CHANNEL, NOGGIN, CARTOON NETWORK, VH1...ETC all on digital channels. But they were not found on analog channels, normally found on Standard Cable service. This is quite amazing to still get these channels and for free. Wife is happy she isn't losing her favorite channels, son is happy he still have Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon, I'm happy cuz I save money. We now save $47 a month. I wish I had known long ago.

Read this article for more info about getting free HD channels. There are certain requirements, but basically all you need is an HDTV with a built-in TV Tuner...almost all HDTV have that. The other requirement is an antenna....don't forget though, antennas will no longer work when DTV transission is in effect. I'm keeping the coaxial cable since the high speed internet uses it and don't wanna mess with free digital box from government. Isn't it about time you stop paying cable tv service?
